For this exercise we will use the Classic Google Maps. A single Google Map will be created with all of the students added as collaborators. Each student is asked to locate one (or more, depending upon class size) particular location on a Google map and to provide material discussing how Silko discusses this location, or why these locations are important to Native peoples of this area. They should also include images and a short 2-3 paragraph description of the location.
Students are asked to map the places that were important in the collection of writings by Leslie Marmon Silko "Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit: Essays on Native American Life Today." Simon and Schuster. 1997. This book is one of the best discussions of the importance of place by a Native writer and also allows us to examine a dramatic and beautiful portion of the country from the mesa east of Albuquerque, New Mexico, extending to near grant and Gallup, New Mexico extending to norther Arizona and the various peoples that inhabit this area.
